Lady Gaga has released the highly anticipated recording of Mayhem Requiem in collaboration with Apple Music. The project was recorded live in January at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. Fans eagerly awaited the project, as it served as a deeply personal farewell to the Mayhem Era. The release, which premiered yesterday, was presented as both a funeral and a celebration, inviting viewers to reflect on the transformative power of Gaga's artistry and these incredible reworked versions of the record we already know and love.

Mayhem Requiem showcased Gaga's remarkable versatility as an artist. The one-off live show featured a diverse array of sounds blending elements of pop, rock, industrial, and synth music. It was presented on a set of ruins, as if the Mayhem ball Stage had been destroyed, and Gaga was performing amongst the rubble. Gaga graced the stage in a black kaftan-style gown and veil, as she churned through an industrial version of “Disease.” It was an incredibly powerful way to start the show: dimly lit, gritty, abrasive, and dark.

Gaga churned through the album tracklist before arriving at “Killah.” This was THE moment. Gaga had originally described Mayhem as gothic and industrial, and whilst there were elements of that sprinkled throughout the record, I always felt a little robbed of those sounds encapsulating a whole record. However, the Mayhem Requiem version of “Killah” made up for all of that… It was as if she had melted down her entire Gagussy, turned it into a USB drive, handed it to the sound engineer, and said, “Play this.” It was PUUUUUSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! An absolute dark, chaotic, electro, industrial, grunge, gothic version of “Killah” that had the entire theatre going wild. I collapsed as she adlibbed, “I wanna fuck you like an animal.” Where do I sign the petition to create LG8 in the vein of this sound ?

A hauntingly beautiful version of “How Bad Do U Want Me” was delivered, encased in synths, and Gaga's vocals were mesmerising and moving. It becomes more anthemic than the original does. “Die With A Smile” closed the show, and my god!!! It was also hauntingly beautiful, as if there really were an apocalypse and Gaga were the last person alive, singing this melancholic, cathartic version of the song, laced with gorgeous dance synths. I was enthralled.

In addition to Mayhem Requiem, an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the show's making was released, offering fans a deeper insight into the creative process behind the performance. It features Gaga, Michael and members of her creative team shedding light on the inspiration, challenges, and triumphs that shaped the project. The visual component, combined with the live album's innovative musical direction, has contributed to an appreciation for Gaga's commitment to pushing artistic boundaries.

Mayhem Requiem marks a pivotal moment in Lady Gaga's career, signalling the end of a significant era and hinting at new creative directions. As she bids farewell to the Mayhem Era, Gaga continues to show audiences worldwide her fearless approach to music and her dedication to self-expression. It is a real honour to witness a living legend continuously raise the bar for herself and others. The Mayhem era will be missed; it was a real treasure. Gaga finally buried Mayhem, but the record and era will live on in our hearts.
