Lydia Butthole Kollins, Kori King, and Suzie Toot swept Sydney fans off their feet last night with their electrifying new show, “ButtTootKing” Presented by ITD Events. Home the venue pulsed with anticipation as the queens took the stage, greeted by a roaring crowd of sapphics, lesbians, gays, theys, and everyone in between. Following a fierce introductory video, the trio launched into a campy Glee megamix, instantly setting the tone for a night of joy and protecting queer art.
Suzie Toot greeted the crowd and expressed her excitement to be in Australia for the first time. She had a magpie plushy friend named Larry for moral support, which instantly won her laughs and applause. Kori King kicked off the solo numbers with a fierce RuPaul megamix, channelling Mama Ru in the best way possible. She kicked, dipped, flipped, and Kakadaka’d her way around that stage before parting the crowd like Moses and the Red Sea, to continue said tricks down on the floor. The energy from both fans and queens alike was infectious! It was an incredible way to get the show really underway!
Lydia B Kollins then treated the crowd to a sultry number in a gorgeous sequined red dress, with a twist of a “The Substance” like creature puppet towards the end. Her performance evoked awe. This was the queer art that Megami wanted us to protect! The ritualistic fan lip sync comp rolled around, this time hosted by Kori King. Three fierce individuals from the crowd strutted their stuff to “Break Free” by Ariana Grande, before a winner was declared. The audience cheered each contestant on, making this moment feel like a true community celebration, something ITD Events does incredibly well.
Suzie and Lydia followed this up with their rendition of “Hot Honey Rag” from Chicago. Bob and Thorgy have infamously done this choreography before; what a treat to see it being delivered to a sizzling Sydney crowd! A tea spilling Q&A followed with all three queens before intermission, and you could feel the crowd hanging onto every word. There was an intimacy here, a sense of being let in on inside jokes and backstage secrets, that only the best live shows can evoke.
The second act kicked off with Suzie delivering live vocals! Her Broadway-worthy pipes sending chills through the room. So Theatre Kid. They were remarkable. Lydia and Kori then paid homage to the iconic RuPaul x Lady Gaga moment from the Muppets Holiday Special. This was PUSS!!! The synergy between the two onstage is a rarity: how brilliant to witness. By this time of the night, the final number was upon us, with each queen doing their own little piece of a megamix before uniting again as a trio onstage. The audience, by now, had not stopped cheering, dancing, and living!
As the final applause echoed through Home, it was clear this wasn’t just a show: it was an experience. The queens had Sydney in the palm of their hands from start to finish, leaving the audience breathless, inspired, and eager for more. In a city renowned for its vibrant drag scene, “ButtTootKing” stands out for its originality, heart, and pure joy. Lydia, Kori, and Suzie are only at the beginning of their reign. If last night is any indication of what these queens will achieve, the best is yet to come. ButtTootKing isn’t just a drag show: it’s a must see celebration of queer artistry.
